PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry has reactivated the anti-truancy task force in the states to deal with errant students.
Deputy Prime Minister and Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the body, comprising education officers, representatives of local councils and parent-teacher associations and community heads, had been formed in at least 52 districts. So far, it has dealt with 942 students.Muhyiddin said although the number of students who play truant was small, he wants members of the task force to be more aggressive in curtailing the habit.
"If this task force can function effectively, I am sure that our efforts to reduce crimes and indiscipline involving students can be achieved."Idle time should be filled with beneficial activities that can reduce the risk of our youngsters whiling away their time in anti-social and criminal activities."The time has come for our students to be actively involved in not just school sports but also those held by the local communities. Schools, parent-teacher associations, local councils, community leaders and sports bodies should work together to provide sports facilities and organise functions to encourage the participation of youth." Muhyiddin said this when he launched a crime prevention campaign organised by the crime prevention foundation, with the cooperation of the education ministry, at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre here. Also present were Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan, Education director-general Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom and crime prevention foundation deputy chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.Muhyiddin said prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had recently announced six core national results areas (NKRAs) that served as a yardstick for the government's performance."This includes the effort to create a safe living environment for the people by way of crime reduction. The government realises that reducing crime and creating a safe environment is our main responsibility that will be evaluated by the people at the end of the day."It will be meaningless to be a developed nation if the rakyat are, all the time, worried about their safety, family and property. The people have a legitimate expectation to live in peace and harmony."From 2004 to 2008, he said 0.03 per cent of the country's more than two million students were involved in crime.
Up to last year, 6,447 crime prevention clubs had been set up in primary and secondary schools, with 380,369 members.
About 64 clubs operate their own websites to expand crime prevention campaigns organised by their respective schools.Muhyiddin said 2,534 police cadet corps platoons with 88,690 members had been formed in schools.

Judge Helps Schools By Disciplining Truants
A Saline County Judge is starting a truancy program and disciplining kids who are skipping school. Judge Bobby McCallister expects more than 100 kids to show up in court Thursday, Oct. 8.
Judge McCallister says if the court steps in, students will be too scared to skip school. He hopes in the long-run, this will help more students graduate from high school.
The Bryant School District, like many around the state and country, has students who skip school.
Spokesperson Jessica Norris says it's a problem.
"Even if its only three or four students that this is affecting their education, the value of those students' education is worth every effort we can make," says Norris.
About five percent of Bryant School District's kids are absent everyday or 370 students out of 7,700 students.
"The legislature says kids are supposed to be in school until they are 18, and I took an oath to uphold that," says Judge McCallister.
McCallister is starting a truancy program in which Saline County's four school districts will send students who continually skip school to court.
McCallister says he can order a vast range of punishment, from community service to fines for parents to even locking them up in juvenile jail.
"If they have missed enough and they're on the verge of losing credit, we will have a monthly review in court with those students," says McCallister.
McCallister says getting kids early before they miss too many credits will mean higher graduation rates.
"Part of the problem we deal with in juvenile court is that kids don't expect enough of themselves," says McCallister.
Most students will have a truancy officer, like a probation officer who will supervise them and make sure they're going to school. The worst offenders will have to meet with the judge regularly.
"They don't want to go see the judge. They don't want their parents to have to take time off from work," says McCallister.
"It shows them we mean business," says Norris.
Judge McCallister says in a way, he is cutting into the parent's role of disciplining, but a lot of parents are not aware their kids are skipping school, so it's actually helping them.

hi friends, so now we have move on to our last RQ that is how to prevent truancy among students. so, as u all read what had zainab and eliza posted they tell that education about truancy is important in the early stage and i totally agree with that point because people are shaped when they are children.futhermore, the school authority also must be aware of this problem and must be always alert to the students that are absent and inform to thier parents so that the parents can control their children from being truant.Truant students place themselves at risk for financial failure, delinquent behaviors and substance abuse. Truancy prevention efforts must involve the family, the school and the community. Preventing truancy is about more than just forcing the child to attend class. You must identify and address the root cause. Now i will explain some steps how to prevent truancy among students:
Step 1
Insist on accurate record keeping. If your child has truancy issues, the school's attendance policies may not be consistent or effective enough to track your child.
Step 2
Ask the school to notify you when your child is absent. The school must notify you whether the absence is excused or unexcused to ensure the child is not forging his own excuses.
Step 3
Investigate the safety of the child's school. An environment with gang or bullying issues encourages truancy.
Step 4
Explore alternative schools in your district. Other truant students can negatively influence your child and you may need to switch schools for severe problems. Talk to your school's guidance counselor about this possibility.
Step 5
Escort your child to school, whether by walking or driving the child. You can shield your child from violence or truant peers by taking her directly to her first class.
Step 6
Work with your child on subjects with which he struggles. Children skip school to avoid facing embarrassment in the classroom when their academic performance is poor.
Step 7
Make school a priority. Students must not miss school to help with the family business or to attend vacations that fall during the school year. Allowing students to miss school for reasons other than illness or family emergencies sends the message that school is not important.

Crime prevention clubs in school to curb truancy crime
KUALA LUMPUR: The Government has set up over 6,000 Crime Prevention Clubs, increased the number of Police Cadet Corp in schools and set up district level Anti Truancy Teams to curb truancy and student involvement in crime.
Deputy Prime Minister and Education Ministers Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said that efforts could only be successful if parents joined in by taking interest in where their children were at all times and what they were doing.
Education on the effects of truancy and criminal activities on childrens’ future was the best way to stop their involvement in unwanted activities.

prevention measures
there are many ways to overcome the truancy problem among students if all the parties work hand in hand.parents or guardians involvements play an important role to overcome the truancy problems among students. Parents must improve the environment of their house so that their children wont get stressed out and start involving themselve in immoral activities such as truancy. parents must show a good example and be a role model for their children. parents also must always keep an eye on their children;s daily activities and always make sure that their children's are doing well in school. There are many cases that children start involving in negative activities because their parents like to push them in studies or anything in their life. therfore, parents must always try to advise their children in a nice way instead of scolding or pushing them all the time.moreover, parents should not let their children take time off school for minor ailments because it might become their habits in future if they are keep on taking off whenever they want.
School must expose their students about importance of good attendance and punctuality
taking an interest in their education ask about school work and encourage them to get involved in school activities.besides that, school must have an good counselling centre where they are encouraged to discuss any problems they may have at school and if necessary inform their teacher or headteacher about anything serious.
as we all know that there are students who skip schools because they afraid of being bully by his or her seniors in school. so that, school authority must take an action towards those who bully these students. however for those serious problems of truancy, school authority must handle them by carrying out hard punishment or may be they can ask for police's help.

- Parents should educate their children about the importance of education. This means parents should teach their children to make school a priority. Therefore, students must not miss school to help with the family business or to attend vacations that fall during the school days. Allowing students to miss school for reasons other than illness or family emergencies sends the message that school is not important.
- Parents should mug up (study) with their children, that is to work with their child on subjects with which he or she struggles in. This is because certain student skips school to avoid facing embarrassment in the classroom when their academic performance is poor.
- Parents are ought to explore alternative schools in their district. This is in case of social problem in the current school their child is in. Parents should be aware that other truant students can negatively influence their child and they might need to switch schools for severe problems. Parents are adviced to talk to the school counselor about this possibility.
- Parents should request the school to notify them when their child is absent. The school must notify parents whether the absence is excused or unexcused to ensure the child is not forging his or her own excuses.
These are the few things that I have summarize from a website. I hope all of you find this post interesting and easy to be carried out. Thank you.

Truancy a problem among pupils
By MAZWIN NIK ANIS
PUTRAJAYA: Truancy tops the list of disciplinary problems among primary school students followed by rude behaviour and the consumption of alcoholic drinks.
The Education Ministry is looking at ways to tackle these problems as the number of errant students have increased.
“Some primary school pupils in Sabah and Sarawak have been found drinking tuak and other locally-made alcoholic drinks and this must be checked immediately,” Deputy Educa-tion Minister Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong told reporters yesterday.
According to the ministry’s records, 0.79% of the primary school pupils were involved in disciplinary problems between January and June this year, compared with 0.78% during the same period last year.
Although the increase was “almost negligible,” it needed to be checked as it involved young individuals who “already know how to skip school, be rude to their teachers and peers and drink alcohol.”
“We believe the pupils are influenced by television programmes or movies. That is where they learn foul language and violent acts,” he said.
Apart from truancy, students were also found to have committed lewd acts and some were even involved in criminal activities such as fighting and causing hurt and injuries to others.
Dr Wee said there were plans to appoint senior discipline teachers and to reduce the student-counsellor ratio to 1:300 from the current 1:500 so that the counsellors would not be over burdened.

1. Poor parental supervision
- parents these days are just too busy with their career to earn a living for their families. kids are left by their own wondering around while parents are at work. children are well aware that their parents are busy at work that they have the guts to bunk off school and chill out with other truants.
2. School atmosphere
- it is obvious that there are many students in a school. therefore, this leads to a noisy environment. there are some students who cant agree to this environment while studying..which eventually leads them to play truant. they rather be at home studying for a better concentration.
3. Lack of attention
- some classes are just over-crowded with students probably because the school lack of classes. in each classes, there are students who need personal attention and expects the teachers to offer such attention. but this is quite impossible for a class with many students. hence, these students make their own decisions to stay back home and get their parents to teach them.

Many Students Play Truant to Be With Boyfriends Badea Abu Al-Naja, Arab News |
MAKKAH, 11 March 2007 — Schoolgirls and female university and college students playing truant and hanging out at coffee shops, shopping malls, restaurants and hotel foyers to meet boyfriends and flirt with men is a widespread problem, which many families and educational institutes are largely oblivious about. Many of these girls are just out for adventure and looking for opportunities to hang out with friends and have fun. Meanwhile, others are out truanting to meet boyfriends. Fundamentally, this sort of behavior is a clear indication that there is a serious problem in the way some families operate and how educational institutes keep a check on truanting students. “It happens all the time. You get lots of young women coming in and making loud noises during college and university time,” said a waiter at a popular restaurant in Makkah, who preferred to remain anonymous. “Many of these women are regulars. They shout and laugh loudly and usually come and meet their boyfriends here. Sometimes, their boyfriends come outside in cars and they go off with them,” he added. The waiter said he knows that the women are students because their conversations are usually “peppered” with talk about their places of study, teachers and their education. “They usually make advance bookings and book an entire table sitting in groups. Their boyfriends usually pay for everything,” he added. The type of behavior that takes place and the fact that students are truanting can lead the women into trouble and even sexual harassment. Sometimes, the women are arrested by local police and members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice. “Their families express a lot of regret and shock that their young darlings are involved in such activities,” said a commission member. Ahmad ibn Qasim Al-Ghamdi, the commission’s general manager in Makkah, said that young women are regularly arrested in public places. “They usually get picked up during school, college and university hours. We don’t just go around looking for young women to arrest. We only stop them if they are definitely involved in things that are contrary to the standard moral practices of the Kingdom,” he said. Al-Ghamdi called on places of education and families to assert a more positive role in stopping the problem from becoming further widespread. What Al-Ghamdi alludes to is possibly true. However, on the other hand some women abuse their parents’ trust and take advantage of the freedom accorded to them at universities, colleges and schools. In fact, some students merely register at university to be able to leave home for a few hours a day and then meet friends and boyfriends. At restaurants they indulge in food and drink and smoke the shisha and cigarettes — activities in an atmosphere that parents would definitely not approve of. According to one waiter at another restaurant, some girls go as far as to take off their headscarves and don make up in spite of there being non-related men around. “It’s a bit of a problem,” he said, adding, “People get annoyed since they go to the extreme of raising their voices and laughing loudly without respecting customers. Some young men hang around just to watch these young women and exchange numbers.” According to the waiter, as the women leave the restaurant they end up being followed by a barrage of men wanting their numbers. The men follow them all the way back to school, college or university. A receptionist at a five-star hotel in Makkah said that one morning a woman came to the hotel foyer, sat around and then moved onto the hotel’s restaurant. “She was dressed in a school uniform and was seated at a table putting on make up. Whenever the waiter would approach her to take her order she would tell him to come later. She was busy all the time speaking on her cell phone,” he said. “After 20 minutes a young man came and she left with him. She also forgot a bag at the table. We looked inside and there were some lingerie and a satin nightdress. I don’t know what she was up to,” he added. Groups of young women who wander around in shopping malls frequenting restaurants and coffee shops are also at risk of harassment and are followed by young men who send them Bluetooth messages via cell phones. A security guard at a popular shopping mall said, “After moving from one shop to the next they usually go into restaurants and coffee shops to relax and unwind. They hang around for quite a few hours and I think they usually head back to their places of study when it is home time there.” He added, “They go back and return home like as if nothing has happened. You can tell they are students by their clothes. Most wear uniforms.” A waiter at a coffee shop mentioned how a student came into the coffee shop. “She was dressed modestly but then went into the bathroom and came out smelling of perfume, wearing make up and had changed her outfit. She was dressed in some sexually provocative clothing. A young man came and off they went in his car,” he added. At the outset it seems there is a host of reasons behind women truanting from school. Some of these women have boyfriends and are prevented by their parents from leaving home unaccompanied and so play truant. “Girls like to flirt with men and hang out together because they like to be pampered and not pay the bill. Some women just find pleasure in manipulating the feelings of men,” said a young Saudi who has had a lot of student girlfriends. Psychologists and sociologists blame the girls’ families and places of study for the problem. Universities, colleges and schools do not stringently keep a check on students and provide far too much free time between one lecture and an another. “It is crucial that there are strict rules preventing students from being absent. Absentees should be able to provide a reasonable excuse. Universities must also inform parents when students are absent,” said sociologist Samir Al-Ghamdi. Al-Ghamdi added that children from broken families are more prone to behaving in a irresponsible fashion. “Parents are so naive, they even trust their maids and drivers and do not realize that the drivers know exactly what is happening,” he added. |

As kids move up into the higher grades, work becomes more challenging and problems are more likely to surface. Without proper supports, students can become easily frustrated and overwhelmed. If school becomes a place where kids feel unsuccessful, they may want to avoid it altogether. Unfortunately, school avoidance in these types of situations usually only makes matters worse, as more class time is missed and grades continue to slip. To combat this problem, be sure to analyze a truant student’s academic record to assess whether or not additional in school academic supports can be provided.
Mental Health Issues
School truancy problems may be a red flag to a more serious problem. More kids than ever are suffering from problems such as anxiety, depression, and substance abuse. These problems can impact with a students’ ability to get themselves to school each morning. Undiagnosed and untreated, these problems can interfere with a student’s overall functioning. If students show symptoms of these problems, a school student assistance or crisis team may be able to intervene and provide some direction.
Family Dynamics
Unfortunately, not all students arrive at school well-rested, well-fed, and ready to start their day. Many students homes are chaotic, some even dysfunctional, and this may impact student’s ability to attend school regularly. Being able to get to sleep at a reasonable hour, get up on time, get ready, and leave in time for school are critical for school attendance and may be difficult in a family that is in crisis. Some students may also be reluctant to leave ill or unstable family members at home alone, or may be used to care for younger siblings or otherwise help out at home during school hours. Families may need help accessing social agencies that can help with some of these issues.
Social Problems
Many students experience social problems, such as bullying or isolation, in school on a regular basis. Fear and shame may cause them to avoid the environment that creates these feelings. These kids may need support in learning social skills or help accessing resources to report and stop bullying. Other students may have friends, but lack a true connection to the larger school community. They may not see themselves as excelling in athletics, music, academics, or any of the other areas schools tend to focus on. For these students, finding a niche where they feel successful, is key.

i totally agree with what aliza has post. i found an interesting article and the causes they given is almost same as eliza's has found however in my opinion the most common factor of trauncy is academic problem. in the article above. it says students play traunt as they cant understand the subject or when they find difficulties in any subject they wont take any insiative t ask teachers and the teacher itself dont bother to know whether everyone i the class understood wat she taught in the class. therefore, once the student fail to understand the previous topic, it will be hard for him to understand the rest of the topics.therefore, once the interest gone, students will start involving in social problem like the most common one is playign truant. besides that, the lack of interest in studies like what eliza han mentioned may be because the method the teacher uses in class to teach the student not interesting enough. the other reason which i think is also very common is social problem. normally it happens in boarding school like bullying, ragging and stuff. all these social problem will make student afraid to come school!

WHY ARE THE STUDENTS PLAYING TRUANT???

1.LACK OF INTEREST TO STUDY
- Most students these days are much more captivated by entertainment such as watching television, playing video games and surfing the net. Therefore, such entertainment will distract their mind from education and this will lead them to play truant.
2.DIFFICULITIES IN UNDERSTANDING LESSONS
- Some students experience difficulities in absorbing and understanding certain subjects/lessons in school such as Mathematics, History, Science and many more. Therefore, some of them play truant simply because they cannot take the pressure of not understanding things.
3.TO ESCAPE FROM BULLIES
- Bullies in school makes most students feel unsafe and insecure. Bullying is a serious matter that even teachers are not able to control it. Most students tend to play truant to excape harassment and physical assault.
4.HEALTH COMPLICATION
- Some students have re-occuring health complication such as asthma, migraine and gastric. these students normally play truant because some parents cant afford to pay the medical bills and medical certificates cant be given too often. As a result, students stay back home and do not attend lessons.
5.MIND-NUMBING LESSONS
- Mind-numbing lessons, in other words, uninteresting lessons are one of the reasons why students play truant. Most students rather stay at home to avoid a boring class. Lessons on history, geography and languages are some of the lessons known to be uninteresting. As for me, lessons may be boring only when a student have no interest in it.

PLANTATION 'LEPAK' SPOT FOR TRUANTS
A VILLAGER from Kampung Batu Melintang, Jeli, came across a clearing at an oil palm plantation, believed to be a popular hangout of students who play truant and indulge in unhealthy activities, Kosmo! reported.
Mohd Rizam Che Abas, 35, was quoted as saying that truancy among both male and female students had become more widespread this year.
“I hope the school authorities will ensure that students do not continue with such activities,” he said.
A check by Kosmo! showed that the oil palm plantation was one of the “lepak” spots where students head to when they skip school.
Villager Nik Abdul Salam Nik Azam, 19, said students frequented the spot to sniff glue and drink beer.
“The plantation is not only frequented by the students but also by other teenagers for immoral activities,” he said.
Jeli OCPD Deputy Supt Mohd Hanifah Abdul Malik said police had been patrolling and monitoring the area to nab students who skip class.
So far, none has been caught yet.

DEFINITION OF TRUANCY
It may also refer to students who attend school but do not go to classes.
Beyond the effect that missed schooling may have on a student's educational attainment, truancy may indicate more deeply embedded problems with the student, the education system, or both. Truancy is commonly associated with juvenile delinquency. In some schools, truancy may result in an ineligibility to graduate or to receive credit for class attended, until the time lost
to truancy is made up through a combination of detention, fines, or summer school.

HI guys ..i'm zainab bt ibrahim from eureka group!..recently i'm studying in ukm ..doing my degree in literature in english...well i guess my friend Eliza already mentioned in the introduction that why we created this blog..:) anywayzs lets talk about truancy now..do u guys know what is truancy...u'll know right..? those who don't know you can read the definition above...i believe after reading it u'll can atleast get a rough ideas abt truancy.. i got this definition from wikipedia...its explain abt what is truancy ..nowadays as we all can see that truancy has become one of the biggest social problem among school students..many students can be seen hanging around with their friends in malls, cinema, cyber cafe during school hours..well..im quite confused as i dont knw whom to blame exactly..i believe there are many reasons behind a student play truant.some kids they play truant may be they don't like the subject or the teacher ..i say this as i used to play truant even during my school time because i didnt like the teacher..the teacher did not teach most of the time n if she teach also i could not understand what she was teaching so i thought better i just skip the class than get scolded from the teacher if i could not answer her questions ..:D but i just hang around in school only like in canteen or sumthing..i noticed few times..even i felt this way before that some teachers like to give more importance to their "pet students" ...hmm!! may b this also can be a reason for student play truant!!...however there another definition i found in this websitehttp://www.pacwcbt.pitt.edu/Curriculum/202%20Truancy%20Prevention%20Intervention/Handouts/HO%202%20Definition%20of%20Truancy.pdf that truancy can be define as students from age 8 to 17 skip classes without any valid excuses for three or more days. there are exceptional for 16 years old students because normally they are employed when school is in session, and they holds an employment certificate. but this is only for certain countries like America
